The Sam Chase and The Untraditional

The Sam Chase & The Untraditional hails from San Francisco, California. This juggernaut of a band blends rock n roll with folk music while maintaining the sensibilities and attitudes that come from growing up on a healthy diet of punk rock.
The leader of the band is The Sam Chase himself, a natural storyteller with a voice that sounds as if it has weathered many an epic tale. With boot stomping orchestration and lyrics that have been immortalized on the tattooed skin of their fans, The Sam Chase & The Untraditional doesn’t mess around.
Hailing from the hills of San Francisco, California, Sam and his band, whom he lovingly refers to as The Untraditional, take to stages all over the country. They play with a virulent and frenetic passion which many history buffs might liken to the Norse warriors known as The Berserkers, who were known to have fought their battles with an uncontrollable, trance-like fury. Norse literature notes that they would work themselves into a rage before battle, consuming drugged food, and dressed in nothing but their enemies’ blood. The Sam Chase and The Untraditional maintain that spirit, but leave the drugged foods and enemies’ blood up to the discretion of the crowd.
These are the warriors we need in these troubled times.
“The Sam Chase has a voice like a nun on the lam with a mouthful cigarettes and curse words in a lonely bar, drunkenly dancing next to a broken jukebox. His songs are scribbled, not written, on lipstick- and sweat-stained motel bedsheets. He likes the way the ink bleeds. His guitar runs on diesel and leaks like the morning after too much whiskey. His is a show you’ll probably want to tattoo on your body so everyone will know that you knew him before he was cool.”

Last year Collin and Co. did a tribute to the Blues Brothers, playing the soundtrack to the motion picture film., as well as many Halloween favorites. Come check out what they have planned for you THIS YEAR on All Hallow’s Eve!
We are a group that knows how to get everyone grooving while playing great dance music from the 50’s to today. 80’s rock, Motown, R&B, 70s funk, you name it. We play weddings, dance parties, corporate events, holiday parties, Class reunions, and other private functions, all at reasonable rates.
Our members have spent many years performing together. We have been the pit band for many artists that visit South Florida including Kansas, Toto, Three Dog Night, Bad Company, Allman Brothers, Marshall Tucker, Blues Image, Steppenwolf, Iron Butterfly, Vanilla Fudge, Molly Hatchett and more.
Our ever-growing song list includes classic tunes by The Beatles, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder, Journey, Al Green and many other classics, as well as modern artists like Pharell Williams, Bruno Mars, Black Eyed Peas, Pearl Jam, and many more! Multi-instrumentalist, composer and arranger, Collin Braley, has a difficult time choosing just one genre of music to play. Should he stick with acoustic instruments and lean on boot stomping bluegrass? Or perhaps plug in, turn the low end up and keep it classy with some vibraphone-lead funk tunes… The one consistency throughout a Collin and Company show is that the music is a giant campaign to get the crowd to dance!
Formed in Braley’s hometown, Cedar Falls, IA, the first Collin and Company show was in 2004 when he was jamming with musician allies in his apartment (much to his neighbors’ chagrin). After enough songs and jams were put together with the only goal of amusing themselves, Braley booked a show and called the group Collin and Company.
Fast-forward 14 years, a Bachelor’s degree majoring in Jazz Studies from the University of Northern Iowa, relocating to Southern Oregon and tens of thousands of miles on the road in bands (Jive Coulis, Lick it Ticket, Hunab), Collin and Co. has a much more sophisticated sound.
An “evening with” usually consists of one set of music with an acoustic, bluegrass/folk tone with a mix of originals and covers from bands like. The second set of music is another mix of originals and covers with more of a rock/funk timbre. C&Co. does renditions of covers from Etta James to Ween or Harry Belafonte to Railroad Earth. Strewn about both sets, Braley leaves a lot of room for each musician to improvise and solo as he did an abundant amount of in his college years.
Although the songs and band members vary each performance, musicians on stage include members of Southern Oregon’s elite bands: 100 Watt Mind, Good Job Honey, Butcher, Buckle Rash, Mystic Roots and more. Each musician brings their own songs, background and skills to influence the sound of the group and the diversity of the set. As Braley switches from the drum set, to the keyboard, to the vibraphone, other band members often include guitars, violin, horn(s), bass, drums and percussion to give it a very unique sound that leaves the listeners wanting more.
The band is gathering recordings at each show to put out the first Collin and Co. album, “Live to Be A… Live” set to be released in Fall 2018. The band is currently planning a summer tour going up and down the West Coast and has festivals, weddings and gigs booked throughout the rest of the Spring.

Terrapin Flyer began in 1999 as the house band for the Sunday Grateful Dead Jam at the Boulevard Cafe in Chicago. Through the many associations developed there and many that have continued since, the band has grown into one of the premier Grateful Dead inspired touring acts in the nation. The band draws from the a variety of skilled musicians including Grateful Dead keyboardists Tom Constanten, Bob Bralove and Vince Welnick (RIP). They also tour with Jerry Garcia Band organist Melvin Seals and Ratdog guitarist Mark Karan. Additionally, they have done one off shows with many guest musicians including grammy award winning blues harpist Sugar Blue, and musician, songwriter and music journalist David Gans. The band has headlined major festivals and prominent venues across the nation.
From the band’s humble beginnings sprang forth an ever growing network of musicians. From a loosely associated group of musicians at a jam night, a band began to develop. The original band came into fruition when they were asked to perform with Grateful Dead keyboardist (1990-1995) Vince Welnick on a cable access television show and festival in Madison, WI. After that the band continued to tour with Welnick and performed several times as “Vince Welnick and Friends including headlining the 2004 Dunegrass Festival in Empire, MI to several thousand in attendance. After several tours with Vince Welnick, the band was ready to move on to its next potent association.
An 8 day tour was planned in 2004 with Melvin Seals the consummate B3 organist of the Jerry Garcia Band for 15 years. The tour was enough fun for Melvin to recognize that this band could perform under the name JGB on it’s next tour and performed to packed houses under the JGB name on another short tour a bit later in the year. From there several shows were performed with that band as Melvin Seals and Friends. After a decade, the partnership with Melvin Seals and Terrapin Flyer continues today and features the band digging deeply into the JGB catalog and sometimes also includes Ratdog guitarist Mark Karan and Tom Constanten as well.
Vince Welnick passed away in 2006. Tom Constanten first performed with Terrapin Flyer shortly after Vince’s passing on the “Vince Welnick Memorial Tour” to celebrate Vince’s memory. The association with Constanten produced several additional tours including performing as Tom Constanten and Friends on occasion. The pairing of Terrapin Flyer and Constanten continues presently and interprets the era that he performed in the Grateful Dead from 1968 – 1970.
In 2009 Terrapin Flyer began performing with Grateful Dead midi-wizard Bob Bralove. Bralove who produced and co-wrote songs on the Grateful Dead’s Infrared Roses album was the proverbial man behind the curtain of the Grateful Dead’s legendary drums and space segments. During this part of the Grateful Dead shows from 1987-1995, Bralove was playing sampled strange and beautiful sounds on a keyboard behind the stage. After the demise of the Grateful Dead, Bralove joined Tom Constanten to perform tours and record several albums as the band Dose Hermanos. Terrapin Flyer has explored deepest space with Bob Bralove on keyboards as well as performing shows with both members of Dose Hermanos together on stage.
From 2011 to 2013, the band toured with Grateful Dead family lead guitarist Mark Karan. Mark was the lead guitarist for the post-Grateful Dead band which featured all the former members The Other Ones. He also performed for 12 years in founding member of the Grateful Dead Bob Weir’s band Ratdog. Recently Mark has been consistently performing with Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh at his new concert venue Terrapin Crossroads.
Today Terrapin Flyer performs with a lineup that continues to bring in new guest musicians, nationally recognized artists and mix up various members from its history to create new and intriguing musical dynamics to each show performed. Other members of the band include lead guitarist Josh Olken, singer Kara Cavanaugh, Bassist Janis Wallin and many other prominent players in the Grateful Dead extended family.
From a jam night to a nationally performing headlining band, through time the resume of the band Terrapin Flyer has indeed become impressive. The band has headlined such prominent festivals and has headlined major venues across the country.
So what or who is Terrapin Flyer? As you have likely surmised that is not simple to define. What is at the core of fundamentals of the band is the idea that the Grateful Dead and Jerry Garcia’s music still has plenty of life in it and that the music being so improvisational in nature can and should go to new places in each performance. No two Terrapin Flyer shows will ever be the same and you never know who might show up to jam at a show, but you can always count on a great time with some of the most recognized artists in the music community.
Terrapin Flyer utilizes a flexible lineup of recognized talent in different configurations. Band lineups are announced on their facebook page prior to events and often include legendary members of the Grateful Dead extended family including Melvin Seals who performed in the Jerry Garcia Band for 15 years, Tom Constanten who was a member of the Grateful Dead from 1968 – 1970, and Joe Chirco drummer from the Zen Tricksters and David Nelson Band.
Terrapin Flyer also utilizes Bassist Janis Wallin from Steve Kimock’s Crazy Engine, soulful singer Kara Cavanaugh, lead guitarist Josh Olken, Former Dark Star Orchestra Bassist Mike Hazdra, Bassist Kevin Campbell from Stampy and many more.
The variety of skilled musicians that are all a part of the band keep the interpretations fresh and exciting. It is a testament to the Grateful Dead’s music that so many different musicians and personalities can come into the band and make the music alive and in the moment.
